Which do you prefer? Color or Black and White?

I usually like black and white, but the color works much better here in my opinion

I like the B&W but feel it could still use some adjustments to tone and contrast along with a crop to remove some of the trees on top
of the frame

Color one. What is the subject? Does seem to very definted very well. Try cropping off at least half the top, maybe more. The only point of interest is the tracks. So bring the attention there.

Subject is the tracks. Will try a further crop. After looking again I think I prefer the color too.

Hmmm...not sure I would (try a tighter crop). I'm no expert, but I think if you went too much tighter and lost the distant hillside, you'd lose a lot of the feel of the picture. The distant hill really makes the tracks that much more interesting IMHO, because it shows where they are going through.

I also prefer the color version.

I agree. This has great potential with some better B & W adjustments. If you have Silver Efex then that might do the trick.

B&W with a crop to the top of the rock cut. This would make the rock wall look more imposing.

One problem of the color version is that there is a brownish tone to the whole image. With some white balance adjustment and a play with curves and vibrance, I think you can make the scene look more interesting.

I decided not to crop your original and only applied the suggestions made above as an example. I do agree that some of the image on top should be cropped to place more emphasis on the tracks.

This is my second ever try at b&w conversion. I do have silver effex so I will go back and work on it some more. Will also work on WB on color version and crop of both. Thanks for the ideas.

Prefer color
Recommend you try sepia and add grain. Could work well for subject.

I think Gene's edit is going in the right direction; but the original and edit looks soft to me. I sharpened and bumped saturation a bit, then tried a sepia B&W.
