Hi,

I have the RRS L Bracket for my 7D, which works well enough. But I am having the hardest time trying to find out what the 2 centering marks mean on the bottom of the plate!

There are 2 marks on the bottom: one a 0 with a | through it, and another plain |. It appears to me the 0 is the one centered with the lens, but if that is so, what is the other |?

And then on the vertical side, there is only 1 |, which seems to me to be the center of the lens as well.

If the | is not the center on the bottom, and the | is the center on the vertical, wouldn't you think that's inconsistent?

I just spent the last 10min googling for this, and still can't figure it out.

Thanks.

I have two RRS L-plates and don't see a | by itself on either. Can you post a picture? The O with the | matches up with the marking on their clamp so if you compose a shot in one orientation, you can flip it over and still be aimed at the same spot.

sorry, kinda hard to see in that pic, but the 0| is centered with the tripod screw. the | is off to the right.

Beats me, I've got 3 of them here and never bothered to try and figure that out. Did you try calling RRS? they're very friendly people and when they tell you, you can tell us.

The "I" mark is to use if you are using a timer remote and the bracket is no longer flush with the side of your camera.

Yep. The plate can be fitted to the bottom of the camera in two positions: One flush and one leaving a bit more space on the left, so you have a bit more room for cables.

It's shown more clear on the page for 1D plates: http://reallyrightstuff.com …1Ds-%28NOT-Mk-III%2fIV%29 (external link)

I always thought the marks were sensor center and the one with the circle through it on the bottom was the sensor center with the L plate butted up against the body and the one without was the same with the plate furthest from the body.

You thought right. And that's what we are saying, right? I think RRS changed the 0 and | markings around somewhere in the last few years. Also, some plates have both markings and some don't.
Sensor center is the same as lens center ;)

Also, some plates have both markings and some don't.

The RRS plate for the 5D Mark III + grip only has a single mark:

The RRS plate for the 5D Mark II + grip had two marks:
