First try at any type of portraits. My mom wanted me to take a family photo for a Christmas card. I tried my best. Used a nifty-fifty on a tripod, a 430ex for fill, and triggered by a RC-6 remote. Advice on to improve for the next time is appreciated. Be nice, be tough; doesn't matter. Just want to get better.

Here's the one that we're likely going to choose for the cards.

Here's another (without me). I thought I caught a pretty good candid. They were all watching the ducks aside from my mom; she's pretty much always posing. Haha

I must say, it is hard to get a good shot where everyone looks good and proper. There's always someone looking to the side or eyes closed. I gained a lot of respect for those that do a lot of portraiture work and those trying to take pictures of their kids.

Lighting is nice. One thing I would have done differently is step back a little so that there are no "limb chops." Hands and fingers are cropped in awkward places.

Yeah, I agree. In that location, it was unavoidable though. Couldn't back the tripod up more, nor my family.

However, I did learn that I need to scope out locations before shooting. Time was not in my favor.

Hi. Well done.

Colors are a little flat. You could add some pop via saturation or viberance in post production. Easy done (if you have the software).
Also the background is a little distracting. Perhaps try to separate your subject from the background and use a wide apperture for a more appealing depth of field.

Great work. Keep shooting.

Cheers
