Has anyone used 100-400L with 1.4x tc ? Does the autofocus still work? How bad does it degrade the image quality ? Which brand do you recommend or have experience with? Thanks for your help everyone.

I used the 100 - 400L with a 1.4x Tamron converter in Alaska. It works but does slow the autofocus down quite a bit so only use it when you have to and by all means use as tripod and cable release. The images were fine but I was using a monopod so many of my iamges were a bit soft.

The Canon 1.4 TC will render autofocus unusable except in 1-series cameras. Other brand TC's will work with limited results as stated above.

I have also used it with the cheap Tamron 1.4TC. Sharpness drops considerably at 400mm as well as the AF slowing but it's useable.

I was not happy with moon shots at 400mm using a 1.4X TCII.

I have used a 1.4 X on a friends 100-400 lens.

As already stated; if the F stop drops below 5.6; no AF. That bieng said; it was a pretty good combo except for the MF. IS still works; so you end up with a > 500mm lens with IS but Manual Focus.

Good Luck.
