For kicks and giggles, I bought a 40mm manual focus lens.

My daughter is fascinated with people with tattoos and piercings, and Austin has a lot of potential photographic subjects in that regard.

So, we're planning to go downtown on Saturday late afternoon and hang out outside some places she thinks we might find people who are game to pose for us.

I want to use OCF and am thinking of sticking my 600EX-RT on a monopod and letting her stand there with it. I have the transmitter, too.

So . . . would you . . . and what would you use to diffuse the light that is super-portable and won't whack other people in the head if they walk by?

I am thinking a lighting set-up might help bring in the talent to pose for us. My daughter is waaaaaaay cool and can strike up a conversation with anyone, so I'm not really worried this will be an embarassing bust, except for the potentially crappy photos as I learn my new tools/toys.

bare flash myself, the hard light will emphasize piercings and personally, I love the way hard light looks. a tip here, take some sort of oil, like a Neutregenia Sesseme Oil or the like for people with tattoos, the oil will make the ink pop.

Check out this video. He used a Quadra in a 39" DO. A Ezybox works well with the 600EX and keeps the whole rig lighter.

Bit pricey but i've been considering getting a Winglight http://winglightstore.com (external link)

It could work on or off camera if it works as good as the reviews say it does.

16 inch, 28 inch Westcott Apollo is made for this sort of thing.
Or as someone mentioned a Lastolite or equivalent. There are also knock off versions of the Westcott.
If all else fails, get a relatively small umbrella and either bounce the flash into it or shoot through it.

.....or you don't have to use an artificial light source (off camera flash) at all.
Do it the old Richard Avedon way!!!

Ok, that street video . . . made my day. Just fantastic! LOVE the idea of the porta-background on a stick. Anyone in Austin area want to go do that, I'm in.

Thank you for the other links.

I like the vid of clay (Mark's second link) That would be an easy way to get the tat images.

The first vid is interesting but too production heavy for what I think of when someone mentions street photographs.

The Avedon vid makes the point, camera, lights are secondary to vision.

I think there is a series when Irving Penn did portraits with a gray background hanging on a couple light stands on the street.

This thread has made me think about doing this again. Thanks for the prod Alison. :-)
