Thanks All,
I have followed this thread for some time and finally decided last summer to ditch my old Sigma 17-35 and go for the L.
Initial thoughts - centre sharpness is greatly improved compared with the Sigma, corner sharpness less so, especially at 17mm, but I knew that, and it's on a par with the Sigma. Colour rendition and contrast is much better than the Sigma.
Importantly, the 17-40L also works really well with IR (I have an IR converted Eos M).
Overall v.happy with the purchase and looking forward to sharing my images with you all.
