From what I can tell, you don't know what the camera is focusing on when using the viewfinder. Is this correct? I looked through the manual for the G15 and couldn't see any indication that there is an AF point visible in the optical viewfinder.
This would make the viewfinder relatively useless.
Am I missing something here?

Nope. It can't see through the lens or onto the sensor, so it is just giving you a green dot when the the LCD would give you a green AF box confirmation. It is best used with center point only AF.

That said, it's no different than shooting film compacts.

Does it show you where the point of central focus is placed? Can you see the green dot at the point of focus, or is it just a confirmation at the bottom of the screen?
This would matter for portraits at F2.
Thanks.

The optical viewfinder is nothing more than a glass (I assume) tunnel with no information displayed. You will get feedback lights flashing or solid just the right of the viewfinder. See this image from the IR website;

Here's a screen capture from the G15 user guide about the lights;

Thanks. I hoped that. The optical viewfinder did more than provide framing.
