I did the same, I have Android phone and it's easier to use USB instead of the audio jack not sure why they didn't do that ? probably to make people buy their hardware.

I would think making it USB would cost more to manufacture, as well as make it larger and require battery power.

Wouldn't you just need a USB cable?

James, it's more than just a USB cable, see the images on Amazon (external link). Keep in mind that this is what I need for my 7D. What you need may be different, see links in the OP.

You get the USB cable with your Camera, unless you bought a used one or lost yours that's another story,
all you need is MHL cable or USB on the go (OTG) adapter and you can find the otg adapters on amazon dirt cheap.

Thanks for the great tip. How does it connect to your iPhone? Did you try this yourself to confirm?

I didn't realize this was just for iPhone. That makes sense why you wouldn't design for that USB interface as it is just about useless for 3rd party developers. On Android this is a very easy operation and it just requires a USB cable (usually the cable that comes with your camera and a cheap ($1.50) OTG mini USB adapter, some equally cheap (if not free) trigger software and you're good to go. (Also, if you opt for something like DSLR Controller, you get quite a bit more functionality in your phone remote than what Trigger Trap offers.)

As Trigger Trap is a solution to get around the limitations Apple puts on your iProducts, yeah, something like a $30 headphone jack interface is yet one more compromise you're probably going to have to take ("and you're gonna like it!").

If you are interested in unleashing your smartphone's power and leveraging it towards your photographic hobby, switch to an Android phone (preferably a Samsung product for this implementation, as HTC tends to be hit-or-miss with their implementation of USB Host) when your 2 years are up.

Until then, a Trigger Trap work-around and premium priced compromise may be the functional ceiling.

Welcome to the dark side < that what we android users looks like in forums like these where 90% of the people here are apple users. :P
