just a quick thing; people talk about the L... as above, davidfig-'When you look through the lens, you know why the L's are so popular. I think the 100-400L is great for its range,' ummm... is the 'L' still the same lens because i found this site:http://www.mkwphotography.com/Canon100400.htm (external link)
it seems to be called the canon 100-400mmL sometimes, is this the same thing? sorry about this...

There is only one "100-400L IS" lens. And that guy's review seems right on the money.

I own the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS, regarded as one of the finest, sharpest zooms made. I also have a 1.4 tc II which brings it to 280mm. In addition to that, I have the 70-300 DO IS, which I find to be an excellent lens. But I digress.

I just got the Canon 100-400 for Christmas. I too was afraid of some things I've read regarding softness at 400. I now find that to be totally unfounded, at least with my sample of it. I think it's worth every bit of what it costs, the IS works wonders. I've handheld it at 1/25 with excellent results. And many, many people here have posted stunning results with it.

I'm in no way denigrating the Bigma. The only thing I'll say is, quality wise, one usually get what one pays for. I've handled the Bigmas and they feel cheaper in comparison. Not cheap, mind you, but just not the same quality.

Now go and search for "Kerso" on here, read the comments from others, then PM or e-mail him for a price on the lens and compare it to Jessops price. I'll be contacting him for my next big purchase.

You can buy another toy with the saving i should think ;)

As for the 100-400L, i couldn't be happier with mine.

The only thing I do not like about this lens is it does throw dust on to the sensor, now this is fact not myth.I only use mine with a 1.4 tcon atached,on sunday I went out thinking I had put my 70-200 on but no it was the dust sucker and guess what? the first goober on my 1DMK2:cry:

Probably a bit late in the day but I've owned both the Bigma and the 100-400. I actually traded in my Bigma for the 100-400. Reason: I wanted to be able to hand-hold. Even with a monopod it was difficult getting a stable shot with the Bigma. Tripod is often not an option when you've got a couple of seconds to react. I had many a "shaken" shot with the Bigma so IS became a requirement.

There's probably some who can handhold the Bigma but they are probably big enough to play tackle for Texas U :-)

Hello all,

I have a chance to buy a used Canon 100-400 L lens for about $850. I've never purchased a used lens so I'm a bit hesitant I looked at it and it looks good. Didn't see any dust or fungus in it and it looks well taken care of. The date code on it shows its an April 2005 version. Do you guys think it's a good idea to buy such an old lens? Any tips or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Buy it that sounds like a great price if it's in good condition. Here in the UK it would go for atleast £750 /$1150 .

This is quite an old thread -- but looks like you just popped in here.

I own the same 100-400 since about 2001 ... have NO issues with it. And it shoots as sharp as i want or need it. Yup, it likes light and bright - but I've shot some very sharp keepers at very long end ... I've never once in these years thought about a different lens for what I shoot.

Have been shooting it on a 30D all this time, and recently upgraded to a 5DM3 and also a 7D ... on the 5DM3 it is amazing, haven't received the 7D yet, but imagine it will preform well, certainly better than on a 30D - which shoot pretty well anyway.

I almost always shoot hand-held, because I hike a lot ... and carrying a tripod or even a mono adds some small amount of hassle. Altho', I do shoot with both occasionally. This is one very nice lens once you realize its limitations ... I'll never own a bag without a 100/400 in it.

cool, so the it's settled? the canon 100-400mm IS is the best choice for me... i mean for photos of animals such as birds....etc...?

It depends. I went for the 400mm prime, because a zoom was going to be at 400mm all the time for my use. I rented the 100-400 first, and it didn't impress me much.

If you want versatility, the 100-400 is definitely the way to go.

Never know, sometimes it takes that many years to develop regret and loathing for something, perhaps he would like to come back and make a new choice.
