Those lenses tend to be the sharpest when wide open and get even better when you start stopping down. Some of the slower aperture lenses don't even perform their best until you get all the way down to f/11 but even then won't be as sharp as the more expensive faster lenses which are often built with better glass and coatings.

Check out Jordan Voth, Connor Surdi, a ton of my favorite portrait photographers are from Seattle, ironically. There's one I can't remember who's name is though and he's my personal favorite.
