The question is whether $600 for perfection over 5-10yrs you own the lens is worth it.
I see it as only $600 for the life of a lens its probably better to go with the Canon.
I think the price will come down a bit and make it more attractive.

+1. Interesting lens but I should wait for reliability or other problems..

They do compensate with a 6 year warranty. I have never owned a Tamron so I can't comment further than this. If reliability suffers, they pay for their lack of design quality, not you. If they keep their promises.

I did create a lens sample thread, so I hope people starting using it when they buy this.

This baby has a lot of potential... Sharp and fast and quite a bit cheaper... However, it's a little short on the long end... 186mm and not 200.

Can you link me to where you read that? I'd like to see the actual numbers of other lenses for comparison.

Yeah, with $600 + the price for the Tamron, you can buy the best zoom dSLR lens on the planet.
That's what I call a LOT! ;)

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Thanks for the link Rally Man.
So not only is the Canon only $600 more but you also get 13mm more reach!

I was strongly considering purchasing the Tamron but now that I find it's only 186mm at the long end compared to 199mm of the Canon I feel that I should shun Tamron on principle of them trying to put one by on us calling it "70-200mm." The difference is significant enough that it seems like false advertising if you ask me. Looking at the charts from Rally Man's link the Canon is quite noticeably tighter visually. It's like the difference between looking at a crop sensor vs FF image for crying out loud! lol

Guess there's no point in hoping for better value. Time to buy the Canon already. :)
