I put up a lot of web galleries with images that are saved to web, but I do so by typically constraining the largest dimension to 800 pixels, with a maximum files size of around 100K. These generally make crappy print images and I warn my clients of that.

Yep, that will work, regardless wether you set the ppi to be 1, 72, 300 or whatever ;)
