I was given a really photogenic bottle of wine from a friend and thought I would have a go at light painting it. At the start I wasn't sure how to go about it but I think I got the hang of it. Which is the best out of the 3 in your opinion, and why? I really like doing still life shots and if anyone has any tips, pointers or general critique I would love to hear it :)

Look here at these wine bottle shots (external link), see how they shot them, see how they must have lit them, then go from there. :)

Now go to the websites (external link) and see how they do it.

Or, just go to YouTube (external link) and watch how they do it.

You're on the right track, you just need to think more about rim lighting n'stuff. :)

I like the first two because you can't see the back ground. I like the first one the best because it has the feel of running into someone in a dark alley and you look up and go "OH S**T!!". The second one gives the feeling of stepping out of a side shadow. Both are really cool in my opinion. I like the darkness they have. Well done.

Good advice. First thing that I noticed was the lack of rim light. They're fading into the background and you need them to pop out of it.

I prefer shot 1. I like the increased contrast compared to the other two and the mixture of highlights and shadow at the bottom of the bottle works well.

Thanks for all the input everyone!

recrisp, thanks for the recommendations. Il have a look through your links now.

Rushmore: I set up for an 8 second exposure, ISO100 and f10(I think) then lit the areas with the light off the screen of my phone :)

I did consider trying to light the base and the top better (which I think is what you mean by rim lighting?) but after seeing how my first few attempts came out I liked the way the bottle kind of disappears into the dark. It set the mood for the type of wine it is, a really dark, red, Gothic styled bottle of wine. so I tried to put a slight 'artistic' sway to it..but I will definitely try the suggested methods :D

I'll respond before reading others' responses...

First, I'll say this is a cool and interesting series! It's very nice work. :D

#1 is the best, imho. The name on the label is properly illuminated. The design in the main part of the label is well lighted, and interesting with the slightly dark line in the middle.

#3 is my second favorite. As with the first, the name on the label is well illuminated. With the label, the fall-off in the upper right portion of the label is a mix. Were this a product photo, it probably wouldn't pass. Artistically however, it's interesting, and perhaps more interesting than #1. I could imagine that over time I'd prefer this one to #1.

With #2, I think too many key portions are hidden from low light. For the right situation this image might work, but I think the other two are much stronger and much better photos.

Again, very nice work! Hope this helps.

I like the first one the best, maybe the third one as a close second.

What bugs me is the little foil/white speck on the bottom left of the red in each picture. I just want RED and it's weird to see that blemish.
