The difference between the unsharp foreground and the sharp background creates feeling of unease, which works well considering the reality. The birds also play a definite role in the disbalance of the scene.

A part of me would like to see the shot with the birds cloned out, might create more "desolation" feel.

Great image. I like the birds being it because even though it's desolate... the birds would still be there.... kinda makes it more real for me anyway. :)
