Yes, that's what I was asking. So the white box converts AC to DC? I have no idea why AC isn't good enough for Apple to use directly. The white box, to me, is a black box.

I’m not an electrician but converting to DC in the box allows it to be safer and also use less power. The DC supply on the cable mimics the DC supply from the battery. If it was AC coming out the cable It would need a much more robust connector so that you couldn’t get electrocuted etc

(I think)

If you hook ac up directly, it would burn out you iphone, ipad etc. There is too much current in your ac coming into your home. Also most electronics run on dc (direct current), your computer, your tv etc. That little box is a transformer. It turns ac (alternating current) into dc (direct current). Your other electronics do the same thing. Basic electronics work on highs and lows which is provided by dc current. It is either on or off (in a high state or a low state) but that is an entirely different lesson. Just remember both ac current and dc current can be dangerous. It depends how high the current is. I once had a friend who was electrocuted on dc current. The current was high and because it was dc, he could not let go. If it had been ac, he would have been able to let go.

Thanks, all! In the course where I might have learned what the white box does, the instructors got behind and skipped the unit on electricity and magnetism. Besides, at that time the white boxes didn't exist yet.

Lindau, right?

Absolutely! Go to the top of the class :-) It's Lindau in Germany - there's another one in Switzerland.

BTW, i's the only place I know that has a lighthouse which is not by the sea.
