I have a Canon 7D and am considering buying a wide-angle lens. I have a budget of around £450-£600. Any recommendations please?

What lens(es) do you have now?

How short a focal length are you envisioning?

I have a Canon 24-105 L, a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 Mk 2, a Canon 100mm macro and a 'Nifty 50'. I was thinking about buying the Canon 17-40 L.

Canon 10-22 and Tokina 11-16, are two very well respected lenses.

You've already got 24-40 covered; just looking at overlap if you're considering the 17-40.

10-22 works very well on my 7D.
Together with 70-200 are great for landscapes.

Another vote for the 10-22. A really good lens!

You really haven't given us enough information.

1) Do you want a prime lens or a zoom lens?

2) Do you want Wide Angle or Ultra Wide Angle?

3) Do you need a fast aperture?

4) Do you need a constant aperture?

5) Do you find the 24-105mm too long as a Walkaround lens?

Right now the lenses you have are really well suited for Full Frame, but also work really well on your 7D. I can see why you would want a wider lens because 24mm is not very wide on a crop camera. If you plan to stay with your 7D for any length of time I would recommend:

EF-S 17-55mm 2.8
EF-S 15-85mm
EF-S 10-22mm

If you plan to upgrade VERY soon, I would get the EF 17-40mm which would round out your present FF kit very nicely.

Thanks for the helpful pointers. To be honest, I think I need to give the whole thing more thought before deciding on a purchase. I am new to DSLR's and find all the advice on this forum invaluable. :)

Hey Chris,

Ya, the 17 up isn't very wide - especially on your cropped lens. You'll need a 10-20/10-22. I went with Sigma to save a bit of money and I am happy with it. I use it for landscapes and architecture. Not a super fast lens but the price point is good.

With such a lens lineup, I would dump the 7D and go 5D3 as the priority.

UWA such as 10-22 and Tokina 11-16 aren't really compatible/designed for ff. No point to hang around/invest on crop-only lens imho.

Tokina 11-16 mk2 would be my vote. I loved the mk1 on my 7D. But knowing I would go FF I got a 16-35 which was very nice on the 7D and even better on the FF cams. Until I saw what my Zeiss 21mm did on FF!
They make a 15mm which is supposed to be the king of WA.

So, would all my current lenses work with a 5D3?

Not only do they work, but your 24-105mm would instantly become a very nice wide angle lens at 24mm.

At one time 28nn and 35mm were considered "wide angle" and 24mm was the beginning of "ultra-wide angle".
