Okay you gotta tell me how to take shots like this. I was in the grand canyon this past weekend and saw the milky way, just couldn't get the camera to take the pic...i tried shining a light on a tree and focusing on that and then left exposure for 30 seconds still came out black...why?

The secrets are....

Focus to infinity (farthest object you can see)
High ISO - 1600+
20-30 second exposures
Wide aperture - ƒ1.4 to ƒ4.5 do the trick
A few beers
