There are different types that are made for UV resistance, extra clarity, extra security, etc. Speaking of which, years ago when I was in D.C. Shooting 35mm slide film (90s) there was no protective barrier between the 1812 flag and viewers. I lost the slides years ago. I was also able to photograph the Declaration of Independence, but it had glass. Only John Hancock's signature was still visible with the naked eye.
