I have to really pinch pennies, so-to-speak. I'll have the camera, kit lens, and nothing else.....except.... I need a flash. I'm wondering what's the most affordable flash I can get that isn't weak. I'm considering the 430 EX II. Will that suffice for general use? I can't afford the big boys. Also, I'd prefer to stay with Canon instead of an off-brand. Thanks Yes 430 would do fine. I've taken many pictures with it and it works great. Specially if you have it off camera. Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 6D, Canon 24-70 F/2.8L, Canon 70-200 F/4L IS, 135mm 2.0 L, 85mm 1.8, Speedlite 430 II.

A nice feature is that the zoom on the flash head matches the kit 24-105 lens and is automatic. -ERJL

Thanks I have a 430ex ii as well as a Yongnuo 560 ii and they are both as good as each other. The Yongnuo was only $70 and it doesn't have ettl, but the next model up (565) is around $100 I think and does have ttl. Jan 18, 2014 21:13 | #7734 I have used the yongnuo 560iii since I got a DSLR; a pair of receivers and you have OCF and remote shutter since the flash has a receiver built in. Works great for me, full manual is fine for my enthusiast usage. 6D | EF 35 f2 IS | EF 50 f1.4 | EF 85 f1.8 | EF 135 f2.0

Thanks Yongnuo has built quite a reputation as a great off-brand flashes.. the 565ex is ETTL and works just as well if not better than the canon equivalents. It is 100% controllable through the 6d's menu. I've had one for 2 years now without a single problem. best of all its only about $100. (yes I know you said you'd prefer canon brand) Ryan - flickr
