Anybody here use a 40mm pancake with their 6d?

I've been trying a bit of street stuff recently, I love my 85mm for the portraits I've been doing, but feel I could do with something a little wider.

Looked at the 35mm f/2, but it's about £400 - the 40mm is only £110.

Anybody any experience with this combo?

Hey Sancho, I moved from a 60D+Sigma 30 1.4 combo to my current 6D+40mm 2.8 setup a few months ago and the combo is very good, useful and portable. I miss the wide aperture of the Sigma occasionally, but because the 6D is so good and clean at high ISO the pancake is a winner.

For the money it is outstanding as long as you aren't expecting L-level colors and contrast. It may fall a little short of that, but you get very good quality for the money.

Try looking for a used copy, as many people buy primes and never take them out of the bag because they favor the convenience of a zoom.

Thanks for that.

I think for the price it is I'm going to give it a go, if I feel it's not quite good enough I'll look at the 35mm.

Transferred to my iphone so not sure how sharp this is, mostly testing for noise. 31mm extension tube at 10,000 ISO.

Hi Sancho, I bought a 40 last month and I've been using it extensively for street.
If you are like me into classic street photography, it's working fine, I use it at f:8, pre focused at 3m. If you are into candid portraits in the street, I find the ride by wire focusing system inconvenient i.e difficult to zone focus quickly. (EDIT:well at that point I can say that I absolutely hate that ride by wire crap, I am not doing video and a normal physical system is to me around 100% better than that STM, but that's roughly speaking)

Basically I bought this lens for its focal, its size and to use it at f:8, I knew why I bought it for.

For the portability, I am 100% happy and like others I take my camera with me much more since I bought that litlle thing.

As for comparing with the 35, it depends on your working distance, the f2 vs f2.8 makes little difference for street photography to my point of view, but the slim size is noticeable indeed. That's my experience.

+ as mickeyb105 mentioned check the used ones, tons of people are re selling this lens because they don't know fixed lenses and they wanted a first experience for cheap...I've got the other issue, I barely had any zoom in the last 20 years and my only 2 zooms almost never see the light.
