If anyone is interested, I have done some test shots with the Samyang 24mm ƒ1.4 lens, these are at the wider end of the aperture :)
NOTE: The lens was focussed while at ƒ3.4, at 1.4 the focus gets thrown out a bit, so you can actually get tighter stars at ƒ1.4

What ISO did you need to use to counteract going from f/1.4 --> f/3.4?

A BIF shot. I'm still unfamiliar with the 6D's AF but it certainly isn't incapable of hitting a moving target (as other posts in this thread have also proven).

Thanks! This lens is definitely a winner in my book. The exif is F/4, 143mm, 1/160 sec

You're lucky to have a great photographer as a bf! My bf and I picked up on photography at the same time almost a year ago and are nowhere as good as you are

I can't wait to find me some good looking friends willing to pose

I used the same settings for all shots, 20 seconds and ISO 6400, but reduced the brightness of each exposure in post, the comparison is really more for sharpness, and can also see the vignetting on the wider apertures.

Oh goodness no. I still feel like I have too much to learn! I look at other people's stuff and want to get to that level!

I think the thing you have going for you the most at this point is the creativity.

I'm sure that all sorts of light and situations would still throw you off, your too new for that not to be true. (As am I !) The creativity though, the ability to have a vision before you click the button, that's what a lot of people lack. A lot of people just take a ton of shots, and hope to find a good one in the mix. I imagine you take fewer shots, and produce more keepers when you do press the shutter button.

I, like most, was snap happy in the beginning; thinking that I could make anything interesting because I had thin DOF and a DSLR. Looking back on those shots, I can laugh. I don't think I'm a whole lot better yet, but I can see my progress.

What I'm trying to say is, Photography is just another medium. It seems like you were already quite artistic before you ever picked up the camera. You can add me to the list of people who hope you stick with it!

Gotcha. The reason I ask is that either shutter speed or ISO is going to change for a given exposure with each of the lenses, and I wasn't sure if you felt like shooting stars at f/1.4 (with a lower ISO) is going to yield a better result than shooting them at f/3.4.

The tradeoff would be lower noise from a lower ISO or less subject movement (particularly with foreground elements) with a faster shutter speed but with less star sharpness. Do you prefer the result with more sharpness even if that means more noise?

(Just trying to get your perspective on this... I'm in the market for a wide angle fast prime for stars but am not sure if the f/1.4 vs f/2.8 is going to matter much.)
