yea....cause these images are irritating the lot of us....

Agreed. Quit it with those gorgeous photos already! Post a blurry underexposed shot of a plant or something just to mix things up.

Speaking of those gorgeous photos of night skies...On my Grand Canyon trip, I tried taking a bunch of shots from within the canyon (almost no light pollution). Clearly, I need to learn how Mack does it, because mine looked nothing like that. All I got was black with a few white dots..

Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.

Gotta start somewhere, this was my first ever star shot :D (not on the 6D though)

nah mate, let Aussie keep the snakes. We do ok without them here

I'm fascinated by them and watch them on tv all the time, but really have a fear of them. Love the photo of the Parrot snake though.

Held a few Pythons while in Thailand and Singapore, amazing creatures!

Yeah. That's how mine came out too. I'm just bummed out that I wasted being in the Grand Canyon. I live in a very populated area (Los Angeles). So these dark skies do not come about very often.
Having said that, what's your easy tip for getting one of these shots going?
I shot a 28mm, wide open (f/1.8) for various exposures from a few seconds to 30 seconds. None of them came out very well.
I read somewhere that one should shoot at high ISO. I think I was at ISO 100, unfortunately. Is that the trick?

Try this:
ƒ2 to ƒ3.4 ish
20 seconds
ISO 3200 up to 10,000

Don't go over 20 seconds or you will get star trailing. Shoot a stop or two down from ƒ1.8, stars will come out crisper (if you get the focus right). High ISO is essential, most people shoot 3200-6400, but I have found ƒ3.4 and 10,000 ISO on the 6D to be the sweet spot.

Hope this helps :)

Yeah. I was shooting at ISO 100. So that's the problem right there.
Another question: How do you get focus right? I was standing in a dark canyon, with no light whatsoever, using my phone as a flashlight to set aperture, shutter speed, etc.
Way too hard to focus on anything in the dark (including manually). I simply set focus to infinity and hit the shutter release.

Yeah if you have a focus window that shows infinity, focus to infinity. If not, at ISO 10,000 or above, in live view, you will see the brightest stars and car focus manually on them?

I'll have to find a dark neck of the woods and try all these new tips.
Thanks Mack!

Drive down towards Victorville and it gets pretty dark in between the main cities in that area.

Great tips Mack, thanks so much for sharing! Might have to give it a go whenever we get a clear night.
