Sometimes I think I'm becoming a better photography and then I look at this website and I am shocked at how much more I have to keep learning.... Everyone's pictures are so good!

I feel that way, too...but more than that, I realize more & more what a crappy, non-scenic area of this globe I live in.

Thanks, OahuMike. I was worried I was the only one that felt that way. This site is my reality check.

I do have scenic views a and still can't capture that true beauty

Had a 6D....

Now have an SL2 and Mavic Pro.... Man life changes.
I would encourage you... To just go for it.

Don't let where you live be an excuse! I live in the mountains, but a local pro has pictures of corn fields and prairies better than anything I've captured in more stunning settings. How can you ever get better if you already dismissed your chances?

I don't know PA too well, but I have been to Bedford area many times. Hiking off Blue Knob or Raystown Lake is full of opportunity. Stunning area and only 100 or so miles from you? Get your tent out and get away. Don't miss a sunrise or sunset!

I'm definitely trying to make the best of what is offered, but working 6 days a week, 9 hours a day, then being Dad, doesn't leave much time. It's just crazy to see people shooting herons and eagles, beautiful beaches, and majestic landscapes every day. It just seems very limited at times around here. I'll never stop shooting and making the best of it, but it does get stale after a while.

The scenic view thing could be fixed with your macro :) a couple of flowers and bugs always helped me feel better in times of crappy geography/ uninspired landscapes. Im now saving for the 100 IS since I got rid of the my 100mm non L to get the 24-105 for a trip in Jan.

A couple shots of my mom and brother, couldn't decide which one I liked more, so I kept both

Both of these were pushed a bit in post, one of them by a little over a full stop, no NR applied... I really don't get how people need MORE shadow recovery than that...

the grass is greener ;)

I happened to think that my area was lame, since I grew up here..... then I made best efforts to shoot during sunset.... it's definitely changed me. Most of what I shoot is within 1 hour's driving distance. I'll revisit the same spot in hopes of better rendition.

I dedicate about 2-4 hours a week for photography. Sometimes I wont shoot for a few weeks, but I shoot with a partner, and look forward to shooting. Some guys would love to grab a beer with their buddy as a way to escape reality for a little bit... photography is my escape.

I work 45-50 hours a week as well, and have kids as well. Take them to the zoo or museum, a good way to spend time with them and shoot.

more would definitely be welcomed.

for instance:

this is a really high dynamic scene, and the image turned out find, but pushed pretty hard both directions. I have pretty heavy presets that hit the sliders hard, as well as the curves. the 6D can handle it, but lesser bodies cannot. Bracketing is cleaner, but a lot of work, and I'll take as much DR as I can get.

Never said I didn't love shooting :) just need a lot more practice. I have my friend who got me into photography (damn him for ruining my wallet) but our jobs and girlfriends give us barely any time to shoot together

Stop trying so hard for a "majestic" scene, or expecting one to just fall in your lap. It won't happen. I am not trying to be a dick in any way, but I work a crap ton and have 2 little ones is I understand getting out for a few hours a week is hard, but do it. The sun rises and sets everywhere, and there are probably a million interesting things that are just not jumping out at you. Take your kids to see the sunrise someplace you think may be a beautiful spot or whatever. Look at that building or field or person a little differently next time and at a different time of day. I am a big believer that I miss thousands of shots that are concealed in seeming normalcy all the time.

I will say, I keep seeing how awesome so many peoples photography is on here and flikr, and all I think is that if every single professional photog left the planet tomorrow, the world wouldn't miss a beat in terms of its photography. I don't mean that to insult those doing it for a living in any way, but more as a holy crap there are thousands of really, really, really PHENOMONAL amateurs out there.

That's something that has held me back trying to earn money out of it. There are thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people out there who are much 'better' than me who don't earn money out of it.

But there's a whole other side to it I suppose

The difference is this. People on potn are always like pro this and pro that, like pro obsessive. Being a professional photographer is NOT like being a pro football player, where your whole life is eliminating talent as you progress with the final cut being a draft you either make or don't, 100% based on ability. Being a pro photographer is the same choice as you doing whatever it is you do. It is a choice anyone can make, not something that magically happens when you are deemed good enough. My pics are much better and much worse than plenty of people that take pics for a living, but, like I presume most of these hundreds of thousands of awesome amateurs out there, my current means of income destroys what photography offers at all but the top levels, and once something is a job, it is a job. I like pictures for fun.

It would kinda bug me though if I there were so many people out there that could easily be as good or better than me at what I do professionally as a side hobby:lol:

Then there is always the art factor. What makes a good picture is completely subjective, so who knows. All I know is that "pro" obsession here is stupid for many reasons.

Nice. It might be a little while though since I recently ordered the 70-200 F4 IS but it is my next lens. Don't you just love that 35 :D at the moment it's my go to.

Thanks
