The 100 IS does indeed rock! I've had mine for two weeks and it has lived on the 6D. Stunning images and Macro ability. What's not to love?

I'm definitely trying to make the best of what is offered, but working 6 days a week, 9 hours a day, then being Dad, doesn't leave much time. It's just crazy to see people shooting herons and eagles, beautiful beaches, and majestic landscapes every day. It just seems very limited at times around here. I'll never stop shooting and making the best of it, but it does get stale after a while.

Yeah I hear ya. I'm a dad too with just a regular 5 day a week job, and it certainly is hard to fit photography in at times. I think I went 6 weeks without capturing a single landscape shot up until the last few weeks. This is why camping works so great for my situation. The whole family can go and it gets me much closer to unique locations. I can get up early and hike up to an hour from the campsite, capture sunrise, and get back to the family without missing a beat. For sunsets I try and pick closer locations so I'm only gone ~60 minutes.

For a few of the backcountry options I have scheduled I am taking vacation days from work on a couple Fridays, going up early and setting up camp so it is ready for family, and then hiking into backcountry solo for one night. I will only get one sunset and one sunrise and then immediately hike back down to be with family for rest of weekend. This is also why the night photography is of interest to me - scheduling both trips around the moon phase so I can get up and shoot some milky way shots at night.

Anyway I totally realize that what works for me may not work for you, but just sharing how I'm trying to have a healthy balance of family, work, and still provide myself with some photography opportunities.

I suggest taking your kit with you everywhere... then you have no excuse for NOT taking photos. And, you will also catch moments that you would have missed.

This is what I bought my EOS M for, though now I usually just take the Fuji, either way I love having a great camera with me at all times

I got a backpack and roll out with my kit everywhere, it is nerdy but works. As far as the kids go, i try to involve them when I go shoot so that I can spend time doing both. My 4 year old is into Bigfoots, so my wife and daughter were at a school thing the other evening and I took him to a local scrub area to look for squatches, and came home with that osprey pic I posted on this thread. I will drag them out of bed for sunrises and let my wife sleep in, you know the drill with kids/work/wife, just incorporate a chance to shoot something when you do the normal stuff when you can.

I have mine everywhere I go, I just keep seeing the same things every day, lol. Don't get me wrong, I shoot macro, Milky Way, and everything in between, I'm just jealous of some of the awesome creatures and landscapes that so many people here have readily at their disposal. I try to get out for some 'away' shooting one day a week, but winter went on forever around here, and now I get rain on my days off, like today. Just gets frustrating at times. I think my wife's a hottie, but she's touch & go with letting me shoot her. If she was all for it all the time, I'd never complain, lol.

Ace, you should head on over to Mt. Washington and do some night city scapes of Pburgh. That's on my list of shots to get....not to mention the plethora of bridges in your town. :)

There's the real issue you need to come to terms with. The main reason all these other images are so interesting to you is that you don't see them every single day. Other people don't see what you see every day so your images will potentially capture their interest more than they capture your own. You just have to recognize this issue so you are able to get past it and again see the beauty in your own area.

Caught this one yesterday evening. A big ass osprey was hanging out on the coolest tree around, and the sky was like all cloudy and a muted sunset so it kinda worked out. I like the creepy feel with the sky, bird of prey and dead tree.

Really great shot, very dark and eerie; I think of Edgar Allen Poe.

Thanks JBlake! I don't know if I processed it right, but this was the one I settled with.

Maybe the problem is that you are seeing the same things everyday, but are you REALLY seeing them?

Mikey, was that on Wednesday evening?

I have one on my camera I took in Ponsonby on Wednesday at around 5pm with the sky tower and the sun reflecting in the windows of the buildings around it.

I'll try processing it sometime today and post it up.

Slightly different angle and distance to yours.
