So many post processing opportunities it hurts. :( PP it more! Throw some curves in for contrast, and mess with the colors. :( oiajsdfoiasjf those mountains!!

I did a few things and honestly, I didn't like it when I overdid it. I had a few variations and liked them this way the most.

Personal preference, I supposed.

I do like how the mountains come to life more, but I don't like how dark it makes the barn and other foreground objects.

Make a blank layer in PS, gradient from black to transparent white, and start from the top and go down. White should be on the bottom. Then, set the layer's blending mode to "overlay" and use opacity/fill until you hit the desire. Also, putting a gradient map over the image, and using the fill with that also decreases the color to some extent in those areas. Just a couple of techniques I use, personally. :)

Gentle touches.

Hopefully you don't get too upset at me for this, but like this for example: http://i.imgur.com/vB8SlRS.jpg (external link)

I'll give that a try. I actually haven't done anything with gradients before.

Oh, and if anyone is familiar with Lee Filters, I am trying to figure out why I'm dumb - https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17060394

A gradient with a low opacity, curves, color balance, selective color, and hue/saturation (messing with the colors) are your key. Just take it a step at a time. :)

So I think I understand your gradient suggestions; I made a blank layer, selected the gradient tool, chose the black to white (left to right) coloring and went from the top to bottom. It definitely increased the darkness of the upper portion of the photo and when I did overlay and adjusted the opacity, the lower portion was fine as well.

What I'm still confused on, however, is how to create a gradient map over the image, unless that's what all of the above means?

You wouldn't use black to white, but rather, black to transparent. So set the opacity at the end of the gradient to none. Black to white will create a darker top and brighter bottom, while black to transparent will simply darken the top, and leave the bottom as is.

A gradient map is a really subtle way of desaturating the image, but in a way that makes it look cool and dramatic. I use it to keep things looking a little more dramatic. It's the very bottom right adjustment in the quick toolbar (the one where you can quickly choose which adjustment you want) when you scroll over it in photoshop.

In the edit of your photo in that link, I used a gradient map a little.

I finally gave seascapes another try. After my 6D nearly getting destroyed by a huge wave the last time I tried I was reluctant to get too close. Thanks to my 10 stop I got a nice 146 second exposure!

My first ever night sky shot. I was camping in Central Oregon and couldn't resist pointing the camera up and taking some shots.

6D, Rok 14/2.8, 3200ISO, 4 30-second shots stacked in DSS. No tweaks in PP other than brightness/contrast and slight clarity. I really need to read up on the tutorials in the astronomy forum.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

So does that milky way kinda thing just randomly appear in images after 20 or so second exposures? How exactly do you see those? I can't ever capture that.
