Hi - I have 580exii and I have an offer to upgrade to 600ex-rt for 100 $.

1. From financial point - is this wort it?
2. Given my gear - would it help or make no difference?
Please note - I am not a pro and just take pictures of kids at home and outside in parks etc and I have had my flash for about 3 years so I don't know how much life is left in it.
Thanks..

Gear: 7D, Canon 70-200 f8 MK II, 70-200 f4 IS, 24-70 f2.8 and Sigmalux 50 f1.4 Flash: 580EXii

If you are getting one, then no. If you are getting several to do OCF, then yes.

thanks guys - well I am only getting one right now. Years down the road if I come across another flash then yes but chances are no.

I am just tempted due to the 100 $ difference. My thinking is that 2-3 years down the road I will have easier time upgrading if I have 600.

The only thing you would be gaining is a hedge against obsolescence. You wouldnt be gaining any capacity that would benefit you until you get more gear.

its good to see for a change that not everybody here is enabler....:)

I just keep thinking that my 580ii could sell for 400 and this guy is offering me for 485 total...thats about 100 $ difference....would my 580ii be worth as much in 1 year?

There is no doubt that the 600 will bring more money than a 580 if you sell it. What I would encourage you to purchase with that $100 is modifiers for your 580, or even the stuff needed to move the flash off camera. In other words something to expand your ability and keep you learning.

For $100 dollars difference I would tell someone to go with the 600 if you are buying brand new. Canon does not offer them anymore but you can still get them. In your case I would do it simply because of what cking2 said.

Just don't get the RT bug :p I just wanted to replace one flash I sold so I decided to go with the 600. Two months later there is a second 600 and the ST-E3-RT in my house. More to come ;)
