So, on the 25th December, I eagerly opened my new 85mm f/1.8 lens, and went for a walk with my son, and a friend, and this is one of the first shots I took (no PP - just a levels adjustment) - admittedly, not the most exciting subject, but it does show the amazing bokeh, and narrow depth of field to its best advantage. . . (Out of approx 225 shots I took during our break in the lakes, and Edinburgh, I am really happy (i.e. 1 in RSP) with 35, reasonably happy (2 rating in RSP) with 52, and have another 9 shots which may be rescuable with PP.

To be fair though, because I wanted to play with my new lens as much as possible, it only came off the camera for a couple of shots of my son splashing around in the bath - the rest of the time - indoors and out, I was just using the 85mm lens.

It is an amazing lens for the price. Mine gets lots of use. Here lately most of my shooting is done with a prime. If you like the 85mm you should also look at the 50mm 1.4. Mine has not left my camera since purchasing it a month ago. My next lens will be the 28mm 1.8.

Thanks Jetmech1, Farrukh.

It's a great lens, and I've got some lovely portraits (not a huge number because, DOF at f/1.8 and a 20 month old son, make it easy to lose focus) with it already.

I'm really happy with the quality of shots from it. In the near future I'd love a 50mm f/1.4 but I don't think I can justify the expense - yes the DOF will be much narrower than with my EX 18-50 f/2.8 and low light performance will be better. But for low light, I have my MZ-3 which is fantastic, and that lovely bokeh? I'll just stand further back with my 85mm :)

I guess I could pick up a 50mm f/1.8 and see if I use it, but I'm put off because a) I've experienced the joys of ring USM - it's lightning fast, accurate, silent, and has full time manual overrride, and b) I can't think of too many situations where the nifty will be much better than my 18-50.

I do think, though, that it's great practise for anyone to stick a prime lens on a body, as it really makes you think in a different mindset when you go out shooting - I had my 18-50 with me, but enjoyed just keeping the 85 on - sure I missed some shots, but then I got other shots, I couldn't have made with the 18-50, so I think it all balances out in the end :)
