Today I got it - the 24-70 L - and was i happy ?
of course. i have just shot a few out in the rain - ( under an umbrella ). looks really nice fantastic colors and contrast.
But as i read this forum about front/back/over/under/and everywhere else than spot on focus problems - one can get paranoid -- shiver... ! :-)
i post 2 shots taken just now
at 24mm and at f2,8-f4 no problem seeing that is not sharp. not sharpened i photoshop - just adjusted levels .
can someone comfort me and say - this is just the way oit is ? :-) smile.

That first shot has to be user error. Unless canon COMPLETELY screwed up a copy of the gorgeous 24-70L, then that is just out of focus. You're paranoid. Looks fine to me. :p

check it for front or back focus...........it's easy, don't have to get overly technical either by shooting charts and rulers.

here is the simplest test you can do, but do it under natural light as flourescent can cuase back focusing, and incadscent can cause front focusing.

for the most part, your 24-70 looks to be working fine.

As bokeh'ed reminds us, Chuck Westfall's described the first shot using AI-Servo as "Release priority", i.e., it's possible to take the first picture with the camera not fully focussed. Focus will refine and improve over the series, however if you're shooting "Continuous". Might you have been in AI-Servo mode?

No - I`m sure it is one shot mode.
Manual settings = 1/200 sec f/2.8
On a Manfrotto 055ProB tripod and a 141RC pan/tilt head.
Distance too subject about 65 cm ( about 2 feet )
Light source SigmaEF-500DG Super.
Set on ETTL.
Using FEL.

Bacause here is a shot same settings same distanse same flash- but handheld.
Fokus aimed on the white spot in the flower inside the red ring.

I think it looks pretty sharp to me.

And as I've said before at 24mm my copy was heavier and longer then my 75-300 IS at 75, so adjust the shutter accordingly.

And just besure to treasure your L or you could be like me, hoping it returns one day.

Even though I am having some slight issues with my 24-70, I still used it to do some shooting over the holidays.... if you follow this link (external link) it will take you to a recent shoot and I think the results are pretty decent. The entire shoot was done with the 24-70... I did this purposely to learn its limitations and its strengths.

Best of luck with yours! :-)
