Catarina. Help?

Hello,

So I have the 480exII and I am trying to get better with it. What do you think about the exposure of this photo. This was spur of the moment just for fun. My other question is HOW do I get rid of that stupid trip coming out of her head? I didn't plan for a photo shoot or I would have gotten to a better place with no trip coming out of the skull.

Yea I have tried that and it looks okay. The problem is that the exposure between the brown piece of trim is just BARELY different. So when I clone it out you can really tell. Other than that though how is the total exposure of the picture?

i like the reds, not sure the skin tone came thru right but then i've never seen her in person

Between the content aware healing and clone it shouldn't be too hard to remove. Sometimes it's hard when you have an open space like that. You don't realize how much light difference there is across the exposure.

Try the content aware healing then play with the opacity on the clone.

Here is a quick fix. Yes if you look for it, you will find the slight difference in color in the background, but most people will only look at her and not really notice the background. I also suggest Smoothing out under her eyes like I did. I think adjusting the placement of your lights to be a little more at her eye level will prevent it from happening in the first place.

Whoa awesome. Thanks for the advice! What tool should I use to smooth out eyes etc? I use photoshop ALL THE TIME but for basic HDR toning and exposure adjustments etc.

For under the eyes, I usually just use the Patch Tool. Just circle the affected area and drag your selection to a clean spot. This will make the affected area look perfect, but perfect is too good and doesn't look realistic so immediately after you drag your selection to the clean spot, hit ctrl+shift+F this will bring up the Fade dialog box. I usually bring it down to 60%, which makes it look smooth, but realistic. NO ONE has perfectly smooth skin under their eyes.

If you are doing a lot of skin retouching, I suggest you also learn how to use frequency separation techniques effectively. Sara Kiesling has a pretty good video about it on YouTube. I have found that for under the eyes, you can maintain texture and just lighten the color by cloning some light colored skin to under the eyes - but just the "color" layer and then just add a tad of smoothing on the "texture" layer with a very mild clone stamp and patching out a couple lines (but not all of them) as needed.

The biggest pitfall many people fall into for skin retouching is that they overdo it (no matter what techniques you use) so you just have to learn the line between "too much" and "just enough". The border between the two is reasonably broad depending on what look you are going for but you will usually know when you have gone too far ... or just ask someone unbiased and they will tell you right away if you have gone too far. People not attached to the project will see it right away.
