Don't worry, it is genuine Canon dust! It is one of those final touches added to help the lens be so special. Be happy it doesn't cost extra to get it!

On a serious note! Unless it is absolutely humongous, don't worry about it, it will not noticeably affect IQ!

I thought genuine Canon dust was extra? Looks like some have been getting away with not paying!

All my lenses have dust inside. L's included. You see everything with dual xenon spotlights... lol

I recently bought two canon lenses (one L the other not). Both had defects. They were sent back and I received another copy of each. In both cases the second copy also had issues. I just gave up after the 2nd one. What defect? Well adhesive on the rear element sloppily applied on the cheaper lens that was easily visible on the inner surface of that element. And the other was minor scratches on the L lens rear element and dust as well, again on the inner surface of the rear element. So be happy it's only dust and not scratches or other stuff. I guess they don't have much quality control these days.

Like Hoverta, I have found some QC issues even with high end L lenses... That is why you must inspect carefully.

Dust is never a big deal. Almost all of my lenses have come with dust inside. From the 70-200 II to the 35L and 85L. With the right light you will see ANY flaw.

Many times those who never see anything and claim to have perfectly clean lenses have not used a bright enough light to really look...

Remove rear cap twist rapidly stop to stop, repeat as required.

......I've never purchased a new lens with any visible dust inside the elements. ......

The problem with a statement like that is there is no way to compare how one person judges an issue vs how another person does.

When I buy a lens I take both caps off, point it towards the sky and peep inside. As long as there is nothing rattling or rolling around inside I have no issue. Others will take a lens and shine a high output light through their lens looking for the smallest speck of dust.

So rest assured Canon has not been cheating you by not including a little dust inside your lenses for you. You are just not looking as closely as some poeple do..... and for you that has worked out fine. No big deal.

John

It's included standard with "L" lenses, but is an extra cost item for the non-L's -- just like lens hoods. ;)

Don't worry, what you're seeing is the Magical L Dust.
And people think the only thing special about Ls are the red ring :P

It comes with its own dust.

It's included in the price.

Canon is hoping you won't notice it until later on, then send it in for cleaning so they can charge you for it.
