SO i need to learn more about photography and junk. I can go out shooting all day, and still have no clue as to what to do.

Im thinking about joining my local camera club when i have some time, as well as taking some photography classes from my local arts center.

I want some good suggestions of books to learn about photos, lighting, and whatever has been very helpful to you.

I will try to keep this list with a tally of how many times its been suggested, but what can you recommend?

Don't forget about all your free resources you have at your finger tips these days. Go to iTunes and query "Learning Photography" or just "Photography" then choose Podcasts. There's a treasure chest of truly great learning there. I'm sure there's one that would meet exactly your taste.

I just looked and found two that may suit you "Photography 101" and "The Art of Photography" podcasts. If these don't do it for you keep looking.

Also check out Karl Taylors (external link) free photo videos on his site and Craft & Visions (external link) web site for some great reading on the cheap.

Either way don't stop shooting and have fun. If it's not fun it's not worth it.

The best lighting book I've ever read, if you are trying to learn about using strobes, is the Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers by Christopher Grey. Its from Amherst Press and they have a lot of good books that I have on my shelf, but that is the best. By the way, you can buy a lot of photography book son Amazon used for pennies on the dollar. As long as they aren't about "digital photography", and more about the art of photography, they are usually timeless.

As you have no doubt learned, processing is as big of a skill as photography. Gone are the days when the photo lab processed your images for you. I recommend Lightroom, and Ed Pierce has some great learning material on how to make it dance.

+ 1 vote for Speedliter's Handbook - Syl Arena

Awesome book, so much information and for once bullet points! I really wish more authors would realise that we don't need their waffling lilting humour or quips. The need is for information, not a novel.

Syl's book is one of the best designed books I have ever read on any technical subject - and that's after 30 years in IT.
