Is the 40mm pancake compatible out of the box with the IDMKIII or do I need some kind of firmware upgrade? I am looking at this as a street shooting lens, from what I've read so far, the reports are kind of startlingly good, is this for real? I've only had L series lenses in the past so at first glance this is something I would not consider, it was by accident that I found myself staring at a review of the pancake lens and followed up by researching other reviews. I'm asking here for real world experience with this lens. I am still passionately in love with my IDMKIII but hate the weight for walking around when I use either my 24-70 or 85 1.2 when out for extended walk but the actual weight of the body alone is no problem with all of the weight back in my hands, it's the heavier lenses that seem to be the bother.

I've been considering a Leica but to be honest I really love the MKIII so much and I've been practicing with it and think it might not be so alarming looking to people with something like the pancake lens. Most of this I'll prefocus, ( I like working with it set at around 5') or use the autofocus if it's fast enough, leave on the auto exposure and shoot at around f5.6, that's where my experimentation so far has taken me and I'm liking it a lot. This style finds little benefit or need for any kind of bokeh and in our NW overcast sky I'll be fine at f 5.6 with up to 1600 ISO if need be.

Any opinion on this lens/body combination or my approach to street shooting. My intention in doing this is to process everything in black and white.

I use it on a 5Dc and I like it very much. This is a shot of a corner of downtown Miami taken with it on the 5Dc. Don't see why it wouldn't work well on your camera.

Actually it is the 1D Mark IV that should have the firmware update. According the the EF 40mm manual:

To shoot with this lens attached on an EOS-1D Mark IV, update the EOS 1D Mark IV firmware to version 1.1.1 or later. Updating to this firmware will optimize exposure accuracy.

I use the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM on my 1Ds Mark II frequently. It is a very good lens and keeps the camera lighter and smaller.

That is very encouraging, I'm fence straddling this evening trying to decide whether to order one or not.

Just read a bunch of reports about the AF quitting, but after resetting the lens will work again only to have it happen over and over. This was when it was first issued I think in June.

I ordered mine on the day that Canon announced the lens. So far it hasn't happened yet and it has a third digit in the SN of '0'. Apparently it only happens to people who push the barrel in with the power on. Canon has a description of the problem here (external link) in the "Drivers/Software" details.

Changes
Firmware Version 1.2.0 addresses the following phenomenon.
1. If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working.
Firmware Version 1.2.0 is for lenses with Firmware Version 1.1.0. If the lens' firmware is already Version 1.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
The lenses with the following serial numbers are equipped with Firmware Version 1.1.0:
The third digit in the serial number is either 0, 1, or 2 (xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, or xx2xxxxxxx).
Lenses with serial numbers other than those listed above are equipped with Firmware Version 1.2.0.

If it does happen, then removing and remounting the lens will correct it. Otherwise just get the firmware updated on the lens if you have an affected model.

It's given my 40D a new lease on life. Way light, way tight profile, way nice images, way cheap.

I hope you've looked at the sample pic thread <here>.

I've had no problem with AF on mine using T2i. In fact, I used it once for a basketball game. It's no 85/1.8, but the AF was fine ... great FOV for groups/crowds. In very poor lighting it doesn't give the same IQ as a /1.8 (can't crop more than about 3x and keep a nice pic). But it's everything it's advertised to be. And, at $150, how can you go wrong?
