If I want to save a file, without merging layers, because I want to come back and finish it up later, how do I do that? I've been saving as a .psd, but when I go back, it's all merged together.

Is there something I'm just not getting? I'm a bit on the slow side sometimes, so if it's something obvious, just bonk me over the head with something.

Yeah... I'm an idiot. Right after I post, I notice that the box to save layers somehow got unchecked.

A .psd (or a .tiff) are working document files. Meaning your different layers within the file SHOULD remain intact and seperate. .psd's are not image files, so if you are using photoshop, then this is the filetype you save as when you want to come back and keep working on the file some more.

As for the PSD's layers being merged when you open it back up into PS.... I don't actually know. It shouldn't be doing that. Are you sure you have not once touched "Flatten" or "Merge Layers"? Only thing I could think of is you are trying to open a PSD file (say created in PS CS6) into an older version of the program (like PS CS3) and it not knowing what to do with the layers since it is a newer format, so it flattens the file so it can at least open it for you. It's common with text fonts) - but even this, I havn't heard of. I'm just making a guess :/ have you selected "save layers" ?

Christina, we must've posted at about the same time. Yeah, it was the "save layers" check box that had somehow gotten unchecked. Thanks for the input!
