I haven't seen a local news photog that shoots Canon who didn't use a 1D4! (Have yet to spot a 1Dx.)

The variety of the job demands it I believe - one moment you're shooting sports, another you're covering an accident, and you get the gist... not to mention this is all on deadline.

Exactly. The better question is why WOULDN"T they be using the Mark IV. I know the paper I string for bought some D800's and Mark3's but no 1Dx's.

I don't know, I didn't once wonder what camera while looking through those photos. They would have been just as powerful with nearly any gear.

I viewed this on my phone earlier but upon returning home I looked again on my monitor. Wow. Just. Wow. I'd love to travel and photograph people and conflict but some of these photos are just unreal and moving.

The photo of the Hindu devotee with the knife through his neck is very haunting. I can't even believe that's real.

+1
Seeing animals in distress or pain usually strikes me harder than seeing people in similar circumstances.

This shot makes me want to go home and hug my puppy.

i just don't get this.

the puppy photo had more emotional impact than the starving baby?

No gear non-sense.
Pure, powerful photography.
Worth slowing down, reading every caption and watching each picture.
Thanks for sharing. -the Reuters link... I couldn't care less about the gizmodo article.

It's a 1st world problem thing. People get so concerned about animals that they forget the humans. I find it utterly disgusting.

Well, since the focus of this thread seems to have turned from the photographs to my comment on them, I suppose I’ll respond.

Maybe I’ve become desensitized to photos of people being injured, killed, dragged through the street, in various stages of post-mortem decay, and yes, starving children. I’ve seen so many similar images in the past years, that when I was going through this set, I barely stopped to think about those pictures. When I hit the one of the puppy, yeah, I stopped, read the write-up and it evoked emotion. If I could save either the puppy or the starving child?.... Yes, the child, of course. Let's not confuse reactions to images to what reactions would be in real life situations.

If you guys want to continue to judge me, go ahead. You’ve got at least three now; you can start a club.

Well said! I will probably get slammed for this but as far as the starving babies go . . . . you are dying / have aids / no home / no food or water . . . STOP HAVING KIDS! It's not rocket science is it . . .

Lets not get into the beauty pageant questions about who should be saved. Discussion of moral and ethics can easily derail, so why don't we agree that the images are powerful, that invite discussion, and best of all that they were not selected because of great sharpness, bokeh, colors, etc but because they are good pictures period.
...or maybe make fun of the statistics of the EXIF data...

His head is turned to the right, if that helps. You can clearly see his ear and that he has a large beard:confused:

Question: Why the Mark IV so popular for photojournalism?

Why the mk4? Because the 1-series body has been the staple of photojournalism since before there was a D after the 1. Its the best Canon makes and for people like me who sometimes have to live out of their cars while on assignment, have their cameras on them all the time with no bags and no lens caps they are the only cameras that can take the abuse. Also the mk4 is popular because most of us aren't rich hobbyists who buy 1dx's and 5d3's when they come out. It always makes me laugh when I come on here and see people talking about how the new camera will help them shoot better. Most of us shoot what the companies give us, or our personal gear is a reflection of 'what will make me the most money,' not 'what will cost me the most money.'
