Why the mk4? Because the 1-series body has been the staple of photojournalism since before there was a D after the 1. Its the best Canon makes and for people like me who sometimes have to live out of their cars while on assignment, have their cameras on them all the time with no bags and no lens caps they are the only cameras that can take the abuse. Also the mk4 is popular because most of us aren't rich hobbyists who buy 1dx's and 5d3's when they come out. It always makes me laugh when I come on here and see people talking about how the new camera will help them shoot better. Most of us shoot what the companies give us, or our personal gear is a reflection of 'what will make me the most money,' not 'what will cost me the most money.'

And there it is - ^^ - the definitive answer! bw!

hey, that's the point of these threads!
indeed, the camera industry is built on upgrading and buying more gear. - just like cars, TV, cell phones and everything else. The economy depends on you buying more!

I guess I'm not up on photojournalism, but I was shocked to see how large of a percentage of the shots were taken with Canon cameras. Does Canon really have that much of the marketshare across the board (i.e sports, wedding photographers, etc) or is it just photojournalism?

They do have a huge market share, and have for decades. However, if you ask some, "the sky is falling" because Nikon has a 36mp full frame camera with 2+ stops of dynamic range......

Whatever makes you feel assured about your equipment. I guess it is always nice to know your camera make is the same as the photo journalists out there. Makes you take better photos. Gives you that warm feeling in your heart:rolleyes:

You'd be singing different tunes if the 36 mpix high dynamic range camera had a Canon logo all over it. But hey...that is human nature I guess.

Personally I shoot Canon, but big time envy the D800. I used it for a week and images are in their own league...but since Reuters photogs don't use it much, I would not be caught dead with the D800.

And so is b1tching incessantly about the same thing over and over and over in thread after thread.

Seriously, do your self a favor and buy the D800. Next up, disconnect from this forum and your life will be that much brighter. Hopefully.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Well said! I will probably get slammed for this but as far as the starving babies go . . . . you are dying / have aids / no home / no food or water . . . STOP HAVING KIDS! It's not rocket science is it . . .

.DAVID.

It looks like you're specifically referring to Africa.
Do you know how many women are raped multiple times during their tormented lifetimes and are forced to carry the babies?
Add to that religion, lack of education, nonexistent healthcare, corruption and you have a recipe for disaster...

But they don't have oil so nobody cares...

Touched some nerves today did I. I just state the facts as I see them. If you don't like them facts...just don't read my posts. Take your own advice and just skip by my posts...your life might just be a little brighter.

Oh...and I do plan on buying the D800 next spring along with the 14-24...but will keep my Canon gear just so I can come onto this board and pick at you.:)

Alright, I give it to you, you're at least using some humor here.
;)

I hope 1 day after you buy your beloved D800, Canon releases the game-changer that's sure to come.
Then we'll have some more fun at your expense... :D

I am actually awaiting for the Canon high mpix camera and if it is as good as the D800, the D800 will be history. But until that time, I'll be getting great images with the D800, come this spring. I've learned over the years that waiting for Canon to do anything is a losing game.

I thought you were a Nikon guy already? No? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

In my experience it's pretty evenly split, even though the images in this study don't show that. I personally have seen an even split at NCAA basketball tournaments, NASCAR races, on the sidelines of big football games, etc. And I can tell you that both companies maintain an equal presence at the Olympics. Granted, sports is only one aspect of what we cover as journalists, but sports events are a good place to see a bunch of us side by side. I personally work at a Nikon newspaper but have maintained my own Canon gear over the years. And even among us papers in the Hearst Corp. its not all uniform. Houston is back to Canon, whereas the MRT (I am told) has been all Nikon since the digital switch. All that aside, typically its just easier to own the same brand as what your company owns that way you don't have to buy your own 300 and 400 lens, and its entirely likely that Reuters has Canon pool gear.

WTF!?
No discussion of which one is the "sharpest" or whether they had a UV filter on?
This thread is surely doomed to oblivion!

Thanks for the link, I really enjoy looking at good photojournalist work. When I was a kid I was always enthralled with Life magazine.
