Night before last I smashed my laptop screen so it's basically dead, unless I use a monitor. My hard drive sounds like a taxing C130 and shoots sparks, battery lasts about 5 min.

I've narrowed down to these two choices. Keep in mind I currently have no editing programs othere than DPP so there is no replacement cost there. I do plan on purchasing a program not sure which one, I'm no pro, have very little digital editing experiance(I think I'm just intimadated, but am trying to get started).

So here are my choices. Prices are from websites, not shopping around

Lenova Ideapad Y580 $1,350 basic specs listed
• 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor( 2.40GHz 6MB)
• Windows 8 64
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB
• 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
• 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080
• 1TB 5400RPM+16G SSD
• Blu-ray/DVD-RW
• 6 Cell Li-Polymer
• Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200BGN
• Bluetooth Version 4.0
• Integrated HD Camera
• HDMI (Out)

MBP 13.3 $1,499 Retina display is not an option due to funds.

  • 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
  • 8GB 1600MHz memory
  • 750GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • Built-in battery (7 hours)2

Gear List.

Apple MBP or the Asus (http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1354554033&sr=1-3 (external link)) - love the Asus for their VFM nature (do a fresh installation though and remove the bloatware)

The 3630 CPU has a turbo boost up to 3.4 GHz, and I am fairly certain Apple always reports the max clock rate each time. The lenovo is a better spec'ed laptop for the same price.

Do you want to run OSX or Windows?

You CAN hackintosh the Windows laptop, but that wont run without some hiccups.

You CAN run flawlessly both OSX and Windows on a Mac and dual boot without issues.

Both are good. The Lenovo is slightly better spec'd, while the Macbook is going to be smaller and lighter. The Macbook you listed can be had as a refurb from Apple for $1269.

I do like my macbooks. Influencing this, of course, is the fact that I like and use Aperture.

You are right.... 12 years managing product lines between Compaq, HP, Toshiba and Lenovo....I have no clue what I am talking about.

Lenovo's build quality is > than Asus, so is their support system (both from a call centre and warranty repair)

Asus makes great machines and is a good company. I primarily use ASUS components for my builds.
