i just got a 5D III, i must say that if i didn't know about the issue, i would not have heard the "extra" noise.
http://www.usa.canon.com …il&docId=0901e02480532d6b (external link)

behind the camera, i probably would not have noticed it.
if i compare the IS noise between the 5D2 and 5D3 and put my ear close to the lens mount, i would say it was about 10-15% louder and maybe a tiny bit grind-ier.

i started this thread to ask about your 200mm f/2 L IS and 5D3 noise issue

here's mine:

lens: UY0401, 1332x serial
5D3: 1.1.3 firmware, 0780240053xx
noise: 10-15% louder, a bit grindy sound
i have not sent the lens/camera to Canon

how about you guys with this combo?
just how noisy are your 200's on the 5D3?

Send the lens back to Canon and they'll swap out the main pcb assembly, part #YG2-2418-020.

The issue I had with the IS was that it turned on, but after release of the shutter button, the IS would make a scratchy sound for the duration until it turned off.

After I had the lens updated, the IS is functioning normally again so that after the shutter button is released, while the IS is still spooling, it doesn't make the same scratchy sound. Instead, it sounds like all my other lenses with IS.

our local canon still has no instructions on this issue.

how noisier was it than the normal IS sound?

Relatively speaking, much louder.

I don't know if there's any variance in how it sounds, since I've only experienced it with my lens (which I bought used). But I'd say the IS sounds pretty much the same when you first initiate focus (with the IS on). As long as you hold down the shutter button half-way, then the IS will do its normal "rattle" noise. But once the shutter button was released, then the IS would make a louder scratchy/rattling noise, an increase in volume that makes you realize something is definitely not right. But the sound only came after release of the shutter button.

The IS on this lens certainly isn't the most quiet, but I've read/heard that to be normal.

Hopefully the Canon Service Center there have knowledge on how to repair for you.

My repair and return shipping was free. I dropped off the lens and it was next-day shipped back to me the following day. Although I did sign up for CPS Gold membership, that was never asked when I dropped off the lens so I'm pretty certain the repair would be covered by Canon.

just FYI about a week ago I sent my lens into canon for this issue and they fixed that noise and a slight back focus issue for free. My 200mm is now insanely tach sharp, quiet and with spot on focus. shoot canon an email...

Mine was louder no doubt on my 5d3. Took it to Canon at Elstree and they replaced the PCB free of charge. Had the lens checked and calibrated as well. It sounds normal like on the other bodies 1d3 and 7d..............Mike

Hi just to add it does not apply to all of them. Check the date code on the lens e.g UW0703 if the last 2 digits the ones in Bold and underlined end is 00, 01 or 02 then it needs to go to Canon.......Mike
