I think they are smaller. But I believe there was a 1/4-20 thread in the base. I'll check tonight when I get home.

If used with the MP-E you might not be able to tilt the 270EX in enough when shooting at 5:1. With the MT-24EX at 5:1 the heads are almost turned all the way in.
I usually always shoot at 1:1 with the canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. Fits almost all my subjects perfectly.
Well, I just called canon parts and they said the parts have been discontinued. Which means, a) dude totally did not know what I meant, or b) they have stopped production of the mt-24ex. Either way, I'm out of luck until I find someone with a broken unit that is willing to spare the ring mount.
However, if the ring mount is too small for hot-shoes it isn't worth my energy.
