Just got my lens about 30 minutes ago and while inspecting the element - this is what I found. What is that gold streak - is the lens made out of gold and coated with aluminum/steel ?

So thats why Canon lenses cost so much! Solid gold!

I think the mount is actually made of plated brass, don't remember where I read that :)

It looks to me like it's lightly damaged, it's mostly cosmetic.
Is the lens new or used (looks used to me). I personally wouldn't care if the lens was bought used.

If you bought used, and it works don't worry about it. If it was bought new, you could see about exchanging it - if it bothers you.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

I am going to assume that they test every single lens before they ship out. How do you test a lens without mounting it? Attach your lens to your camera, shoot and forget about it. Your going to do it anyways when you mount and un mount the lens

It's kind of hard to tell from the pics! But does your four screws show signs of ware, do they look chipped, chewed up a little bit. if so SEND IT BACK! Did you buy the lens new, If so I would probably send it back just for the ease of mind.If you bought it used, GOOD LUCK!

I think I am going to send it back to Canon. I spent 1750 $ for this lens - refurbished. This is not just a color - its actually a deep scratch. I can't imaging how someone could do this.

Besides, I heavily rely on buying and selling and don't want something like this to affect the resale price of the lens 1 year down the road.

And since I was able to score a brand new one for 1780 + 100 $ for the 4 year warranty (accidental included) I have no need for this one. :)

I received a refurb 85L that had a scratch on the front element. I called and got it exchanged (they paid for return shipping). The replacement was perfect.

Where did you find one brand new for $1780.00?

Also, I never understood why someone would pay so much for a lens, body etc. and buy a refurb just to save a couple hundred bucks. I like getting my stuff BRAND SPANKING NEW!

You would be surprised that even "BRAND SPANKING NEW!" items have flaws, as well. I have had my share...

All you can do is inspect any item when you get it. New, used, refurbished, whatever. Make a return/exchange if possible and move along. No harm.

A couple of hundred here another couple of hundred there, and suddenly its more than just a little bit of money.

I absolutely agree 100%, Unfortunately I know that all to well from experience! When I got my first 7D w/ the 28-135 I eventually noticed a dead pixel in the exact same spot in all of my pics. I even went back to the very first photos, and sure enough it was there also. But I also checked the lens closely and "O-M-G" I could not believe what I had seen, The glass actually had not 1, but 2 bubbles in it. So that whole bundle was bad! "I was starting to lose faith in "Canon" real quick". It was my first camera so I didn't know what the heck to look for right away. and by the time i noticed it it was pass my refund date. But the guys at BEST BUY were real cool, They couldn't believe it themselves and they exchanged it for a brand new one and I have been a happy camper ever since.

I would suggest to everyone to check your body's and lenses thoroughly upon arrival. take a picture of a few different solid colors and examine "Pixel Peep" those photos on a big screen. Also check both ends of your lenses (Looking through the lens one end to the other, preferably against a light source) and look for any Debris, fingerprints, Dust, Bubbles, Cracks etc.

So you bought a refurbished lens and expect perfect?
If you want perfect buy new.
And if you, *heavily rely on buying and selling", are you a dealer and hoping to make a fast buck on the difference between new and refurbished?
Just a thought.

An excellent thought Paul.

Nope I am not a dealer. I am never satisfied with one thing - I just got into the photography about a year ago and I have so far bought and sold
50 1.8, 17.55 f2.8, 70-200 f4 non is, 70-200 f4 IS, 17-40 , canon 480ii and 580ii flash, t3i, 60D.

I am certain if I stick around in this long enough I will be selling the 70-200 f2.8 IS I just purchased along with 7D to go to 5DMk III and a solid simple all purpose prime.

I have done this with watches, fountain pens, teas, shaving razors etc.

But coming back to this, its a refurbished but my standards are a little high when I spend 1700 $. I don't think like most of the professionals here who are rightfully more concerned with function rather form. Unfortunately I am a little superficial in the sense I want a perfect lens and that too a refurbished one - just like people getting refurbished 5DMk ii are hoping to have a 100 shutter count. They are not going to take the camera back to Canon with the intent to pay full price because they got a camera low or zero shutter count.
