You would be surprised that even "BRAND SPANKING NEW!" items have flaws, as well. I have had my share...

All you can do is inspect any item when you get it. New, used, refurbished, whatever. Make a return/exchange if possible and move along. No harm.

I agree with this... :)

Yup manufacturing flaws... The mount probably got scratched by the machine milling or plating it. Just return it but it shouldn't affect performance. I had dust in some of my new Canon lenses and I have just accepted that nothing is perfect.

Maybe that flaw on the lens mount is why it has been classified as being refurbished, if you send it back and get another refurbished lens, you might find out it's in worse condition. If your really picky, you can change the lens mount before you sell it. Every time you mount the lens you put scrapes in the lens mount that is inevitable.

I'd keep it if it was perfect everywhere else, by default refurbish means used in some demonstration purpose or returned faulty and repaired or repaired when they haven't passed QC.

The screw on the right side of the 2nd picture would make me want to send that back. Stripped head? No thanks, refurbished or not.

Item going back to canon. And a branded new - not refurbished one on the way :)

I think I am going to send it back to Canon. I spent 1750 $ for this lens - refurbished. This is not just a color - its actually a deep scratch. I can't imaging how someone could do this.

Besides, I heavily rely on buying and selling and don't want something like this to affect the resale price of the lens 1 year down the road.

And since I was able to score a brand new one for 1780 + 100 $ for the 4 year warranty (accidental included) I have no need for this one. :)

If it is a refurb I can't say I'm surprised then. Chances are they aren't going to rebuild every lens that is refurbed but instead test and repair what is broke if anything is broke otherwise they will put it back out. Too expensive to repair and rebuild everything if it isn't broke. And your price shows that going from a 2400 lens to a 1700 lens.

If you would rather have a new item I can easily understand. That would be my own preference but thing is chances are you are going to have to pay the new price for it rather then the used price. Good news is it seems now is the time to do it as canon I believe has some rebate out right now taking 400 off a new lens :)

EDIT: OK so I'm slow didn't see a page two and now I did only to realize you bought a new one. congrats on the purchase, you should enjoy the little, I mean big bugger.
