We Brits really have it hard. Coffee, chocolate, wine and CAMERAS are all cheaper in Europe....which we technically are apart of but price wise are not! Example, Canon EF 17-40 f4 L - Uk Best Price £543

T4 Cameras (www.t4cameras.co.uk (external link)) are doing them for £519... Nice helpful staff as well.

Still too much IMO!!

careful with the DO version of the 70-300 IS. i've seen examples and complaints of it being "soft" at 300. of course i've also seen some contradictory reports that it is sharp at 300.

do some research before plunging.

Concur ... A friend has one and we think it's either a bad copy or soft for the price. Testing further today actually.

I wonder if prices will ever drop if Britain takes the Euro, as we will then have not to convert prices??

The Euro has nothing to do with it. The 17-40 goes for around €1000 (£690/ US$1200) in Ireland. The problem is Canon and the stores. Canon issue the store with price lists and the stores don't discount from it to compete. Call it a cartel if you wish. Heck, the 350D still costs around €1100 in Ireland. I got mine with the kit lens for €780 in Munich last Summer.

I've read a few posts here lately about how people should wait a while before buying the 24-105L because they'd be paying a premium for a new lens, but I'm wondering if people have some examples where the price of a Canon lens has dropped significantly after time. I've been wanting to get a 70-300 DO since it came out but have waited for it to no longer be a "new" lens. However, at least here in Australia, the price hasn't budged an inch. Started at around $2000 AUD, and is still $2000 AUD!

More importantly waiting lets them shake out the production problems. Same logic applies from computers to cars.

I bought the XT when it first came out for $999. You can now pick it up for under $700.

I didn't know the XT was a lens ;)

Of course the price of bodies is always driven lower due to the much shorter product release cycle. In the case of DSLRs the cost is also rapidly coming down due the infancy of the technology. Remember how much a D30 was when first released? I thought I got a bargain when I bought one new 4 years ago for £1400! There is no doubt in my mind that bodies will eventually drop close to the equivalent cost of previous film bodies (factoring inflation of course).
