I like the wet hair look. But theres something that I cant put my finger on. Maybe you need to soften it up a little. It almost looks like you cut and pasted it on a different background.

Her eyes are out of focus and that's extremely noticible ... and like the previous person mentioned, she looks like you've cut her out and pasted her here.

Because of the focus issue, the shot is a loss.

You don't have to, the camera does it for you...

Thanks all.

Okay - now I feel REALLY stoopid, where do I find the exposure settings in PS - am assuming its some sort of properties dialog.

I did edit the background because she had some 'loose' hair that was annoying me and I just wanted to work on my pp skills at the same time but obviously didnt do one of my better jobs on this one and knew it just wanted to see what areas people would pick to work on. Also removed some wrinkles/blemishes and hair from the right shoulder. Should post the orig but dont have it with me.

How could I make her and the background 'fit' better ?

Because of the focus issue, the shot is a loss.

Harsh but true - just as well I come here to learn !!

I think it is a good shot but would like to see the original. (the cut out is a bit obvious around the hair). I think with some PS work this shot could dress up quite nicely. She has a very genuine expression.:)

If you want people to try and edit it you need to give specific permission that it is okay to do so, or change your profile settings to allow image editing.

Have changed my profile to allow editing, PP examples welcome!!

Specific questions I have -

1. Where can I find the exposure settings in PS, quick google turned up nothing
2. How could I better blend the hair with background
3. When using patch tool (around eyebrows) it left a section quite dark where eyebrows were covered, can the patch totally replace the tones instead of averaging ?

maybe I should post these type of q's in a different forum...

File -> File Info ... and select "Camera Data 1". Do a google on "EXIF" and you'll find out a lot more!

To find the exif data click on file and then file info.

Oops. Too late.

Good try but the eyes out of focus and the changed background bothers me some. Keep trying though!

I think the out of focus eyes (generally a bad thing) wouldn't be quite so annoying if the rest of her body weren't so dang sharp. That's why it looks like a cut out. There are razor sharp edges all around her body even while her eyes are soft.

Try this... go back to the original and sharpen the eyes and don't cut her out of the background, just soften up the background you have and see what you get.

I think it would be helpful to see the original. Comments then could be directed at the shot or the PP work. Just my thoughts....

That would work. I'm not sure but can the 350 change focus points like the 10D and 20D. Maybe the focus points settings are off.

Yes, metering modes/points can be changed, given it was fairly low light maybe I should have used partial metering? must go and try some test shots to compare...

I agree with Turnerzdad about the original would be better to work from. I worked with the image and got the eyes looking alot better (IMHO) with some USM, but the harsh edges of the cut-out made it difficult to sharpen the rest of the picture, particularily at low resolution.

After you have your selection for a cut a paste you should "feather" the selection to blend it more natuarlly into the background. There is also other ways of selecting fine details like hair and blending than using the extract tool.
