Debating if I should get the canon 50 1.4 especially now that is 299 just picked up the canon 60 2.8 for mostly portraits and some macro but I don't really like having micro motor in the 50 1.4 but at the price it's kinda hard to pass up and maybe get the 40 2.8 with it. But in the defense of the macro it's sharp right at 2.8 and up and a little more reach than 50 1.4' plus the already have the canon 10-22 and the 35L I think I have a great all round setup and each lens is totally different than the other one. Anybody thinks I should get the 50 1.4 and 40 2.8 or just keep my setup

Sounds like a nice setup.

Don't Tamron offer a 60mm F/2 macro? You could get that and do away with both the Canon 60mm and the idea of the 50mm I suppose. If shooting at F/2.8 you might consider using a zoom instead - I realise they're not macro but some can still focus quite close.

I would keep the 60mm 2.8 macro as it might be the sharpest lens Canon makes. It certainly is sharper than my many L lenses. I think you have a great set up as it is.

Take a look at the "what do you most regret buying" thread and count the number of people who regret buying the 50mm 1.4. While some have had a good experience, many others, including myself, are frustrated by the soft images it produces at wide apertures.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.

For the 50mm I'd say it's more or less a matter of whether you need fast glass or not. It's fairly soft wide open @1.4, but sharpens up nicely at f2, and if you need the wider aperture you have the option. f/2.8 is sort-of-fast, but it's often not fast enough if you're working with indoor available light. True it doesn't have IF ring USM, but I've honestly never been able to tell the performance difference between it and my ring USM lenses.

The EF-S 60 is nice, it's definitely one of the sharpest lenses Canon makes, and it's good if you're doing macro with flowers or product photography. I prefer the 100mm macro (either the USM or L versions are great) as the extra focal length gives you a more comfortable working distance if you're doing macro with insects. You're more likely to frighten them off when you're getting close enough for 1:1 with the 60mm.
