Missing RAW files

I just bought the Canon 20D. I took many pictures in both RAW and JPEG modes to test the functionality of the camera. However, I can’t find the RAW files when I connect the camera to the computer. I see all the JPEGs and nothing more.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a trick to it?

Thanks.

You need to open raw files with supplied canon software ( canon photo professional ) or a 3rd party software......... I use RawShooter premium 2006 but there is a free version available here......... http://www.pixmantec.com/: (external link))

If you use a card reader (even with USB2 still faster than direct from camera) you can use File Explorer, etc. for copying them over.

b1gdaddy, thanks I'll use the software that they provided, but I can't even find the files.

Jon, that's what I thought also. But using windows explorer I only see the JPEGs. I see 3 folders and JPEGs in all three folders.

I know I selected RAW+M mode while taking most pictures. I see the JPEG files, but the RAW files aren't even visible. I was wondering if there was a trick to it or something obvious that I am missing.

If you were in one of the "Basic" (pictures and green box on the dial) modes, it only takes JPEGs, regardless of what you might have set. There are a lot of other menu options that aren't there in "Basic" either.

I'll be damned, you learn something new everyday, and this I didn't know. I never shoot in the basic modes so its no wonder but it's good to know.

Bika,

I have the same problem. I'm going to try removing and re-installing the driver files, but I can't see that it's going to help. Did you get it resolved?

From what I've understood, you have to have a card reader to find the raw files. I have the same problem. So i just ordered one..

Remember - the Canon software will see RAW files on camera and from card readers. If you use XP's Camera & Scanner Wizard, it doesn't understand all the various types of RAW, so it'll only pick up JPEGs. If you are connecting your camera up via USB, the RAW files may be there, but not seen in C&SW. If you use a card reader, you can look at the card using File Explorer, and all the files will be there. BUT if you were in the Basic Zone, there won't be any RAW files to copy over. If you were shooting RAW, not RAW+JPEG, in the Creative Zone, there won't be JPEGs to copy over, only RAW.

MS plug in

With the popularity of digital cameras, and the increasing popularity of shooting in RAW MS has come up with a plug in to allow you to view RAW files. http://www.microsoft.com …66fd4a3286&DisplayLang=en (external link)
I started shooting RAW from the very begining(Canon S30), I started out with a card reader too, in fact I have never downloaded a photo from the camera. I used zoom(doom)browser and found I didn't like it, the solution I found was BreezeBrowser http://www.breezesys.com/ (external link)
It's great for viewing and converting your RAW files(although it doesn't actually view the RAW files, but the companion JPEGs)It's simple and does it's job well.
Corel's newest version of Paint Shop Pro will browse and convert RAW files.
ACDsee also supports RAW and is a do it all program with an easy interface.

If you connect the camera with the USB cable and use Windows Explorer, it'll see all the files (raw, jpg) and you can copy them to your hard drive. Although a card reader is immensely easier.

You guys were right. It's not possible to see the RAW files by connecting the camera directly with the computer. You HAVE to use a card reader. I've got a HP printer that has card reader built in it, so I used that to read the CR2 files.

Now I have to figure out a way to make this faster. The networked printer copies over 1GB worth of data in about 30 minutes. Thats a long time....

Bika, go to Wal-Mart and get the Lexar USB 2.0 Multi-Card Reader for about $20 to $25. You won't be disappointed.

If you use the Canon software, or another third party downloader utility, it's possible to see RAW on the camera. It's just when relying on Windows built-in camera support that it won't be.
