Is the 20/2.8 worth of purchase? I need a wide angle lens, but I was thinking ina zoom rather than a prime. If not that great, what would the alternative be? Thanks,

According to lots of review, this prime lens is even worse than a zoom(16-35/17-40),
it won't give you a lot of surprise.
I had considered this lens before, but I do need f/1.8,
finally I chose 28 1.8 instead of 20 2.8

Are you using a crop camera or full frame?

I like the 20/2.8 a lot. Bought one used many years ago and have used it on film, crop and full frame digital. It's not very wide on a crop camera, but still is a nice focal length (equiv. to 32mm full frame).

On full frame (5DII):

On crop cameras (50D, 30D):

The top left, middle and bottom left photos were shot with B+W Kaesemann circular polarizer. The other two were filterless.

The 28/1.8 is also a nice lens....

It's just not at all wide on a crop camera. There it's my "normal" lens. On full frame, I'd prefer a 24mm but Canon hasn't offered one that's got USM and isn't pricey (24/2 IS has STM, but is pretty expensive and I don't need IS on it... 24/1.4L is pretty big and uber expensive.)

I like mine. It focuses well and has low distortion. The colors and sharpness are not amazing, but that's a trade-off you make at this price point.

I personally love this lens. First time I ever came across it was from my brother and once I threw it on my 5DMK3 I was amazed by it. I've gotten some great images with it mainly landscape stuff. I was thinking of selling mines to get the 24L II which is what I originally wanted before I got the 20 but due to not having enough funds at that time I went and got one and wasnt disappointed.

Well, I got the 20/2.8. I figure that a 40 year old lens is still being sold, it must be good. I used it on my 5DII and these are my first shots:

These last two were taken with the 85/1.8:
