had the sigma 30, not a huge fan. Lost too much versatility, lost a bit of IQ when compared to my tamron. When using flash, the 1.4 is negligible anyway and @2.8, the tamron is sharper. This fat boy has very limited use (granted this might be exactly what you need), in low light, close to your subject indoor photography when flash is not desired.

I like my Sigma 30 and use it often. I agree with another post about using flash. Try bouncing, diffuser, etc. Indoors, I can usually stay at ISO 400-800 depending on how far I am from a wall, how much ambient light there is, or how much light I may want seeping in from a window, etc. If you balance available light and flash you will be fine. Not to mention the 17-55 is just so sharp...its a great lend to use for indoors!

I love the Sigma 30.. I used it indoors many times in low light situations without flash.
On a crop the focal length is perfect for short indoor use. I typically try and use it at f2-2.2 to get good sharpness and DOF. I find the colors and IQ excellent!

If you are going to use bounce flash then the Sigma is not as relevant and I end up using my 15-85 for more convenience.

Another vote for sigma 30 when not using a flash. It was my favorite indoor lens for small / low light indoor spaces on a cropped body.

The Canon 28mm f/1.8 was my main indoor prime when shooting with a crop body. However, I still often used an external flash with the lens to fill in the shadows. Sometimes you need a flash regardless of the lens aperture.

The advantage of the 28mm f/1.8 over the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is that the Canon will also work on a full frame body, providing a wide angle prime lens solution for that type camera.

Learn to use your flash well. Nothing will make a bigger difference.
