Why is 70-200 2.8 such a popular lens especial the Canon version. Why do a large majority of photographers us a Canon 70-200mm. I short just about everything with a 50mm. Is this a do all lens?

It's a sharp lens and fast for it's focal length. Photographers use it because it's good :) Regarding whether it's a do all lens, that really depends on your photography and what you shoot.

Wouldn't say do all, would say do alot. Personally, I find the zoom range to be perfect on FF/1.3x and it provides prime like sharpness at a fast and constant aperture. It lives on my 5D3 and only comes off when I need to go wider, which is rare.

i've had 4 of them including the one i have now, rarely use it. It's versatile, which for me is enough to keep one around. i'm thinking about adding the 70-200 f4, it's light and would work pretty well for most of what i do with one.

Those people who have actual experience with cameras and photography have found that that the 70-200mm range of field of view, along with the light-gathering capability of he constant aperture makes for an extremely versatile unit.

This is what happens when a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is mounted to a camera and used to generate actual pictures.

By the way, the versatility of a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens did not begin with the era of digital cameras. A lens with those specifications has been a preferred photographic workhorse for most of the last 40 years, and that's the case for all of the similar lenses that have been produced by several manufacturers. As you progress beyond the state of being a photographic beginner, you have a good chance of learning what equipment works best on a practical basis.
