I have a 1Dmk3 (1.3 crop) and a 100-400L, but lately I've been needing more reach. I've developed an interest in capturing raptors, primarily eagles. I still do my favorites.........motocross, drag racing, air shows. But lately I've been chasing the elusive bald eagles around a local lake.

Regardless, I did some researching on this great forum a week or so ago......and found several people with a lot of luck with Kenko extenders. Low and behold, I found one locally on Craigslist. Specifically it is a Kenko MC4 AF 1.4X DGX. The price was about 1/3 of what it'd cost new, and it looks brand new! I will post a review in the equipment forum with some tests with/without the extension, in case anyone else was wondering. Most threads I found were tests with the 5Dmk2 and the 7D, so maybe it'll help someone else out down the road. This is already a long message, but as far as AF goes......it is definitely slower, but it is very managable so far. The real test will be when I go to a MX race or find some raptors in flight.

Forgive me for using Facebook as a host, but I am currently at work. If I remember, I will host them on my server Friday. Obviously Facebook compresses photos.....but obviously some clarity is lost with the extension. With good enough lighting though, there is barely a difference at all. With my 1D the 100-400L shoots at f8.

This squadron of Apaches flew directly across the runway, over the observation deck. Even though I couldn't get too good of a shot overhead with my zoom....it was still very cool to experience. One lone Longbow in the group.....

Any of you aviation enthusiasts able to explain the flames from the exhaust on this incoming passenger jet? Didn't notice it until I was going through my pics....

I got to the airport and hit the 'big' observation deck for most of these pics. What did I see first when I got onto the deck? A red tailed hawk on a lightpost....lol

Like your flickr shoots; but none of those from facebook as above, maybe the Kenko combo didn't do any good.
Thanks for sharing.

The "flames" in photo 4 is the hot jet exhaust creating a heat haze that is distorting the air and the background behind.

You can see it in photo 2 as well. If you look at the runway/taxiway at the top of photo 1 you can see natural heat haze.

I will go out this weekend to get some shots in full sun, instead of when its late/dark. The few shots I got that were decent had good natural lighting. I'll just need to be conscious that I need even more light than before with the dust pump. Thanks. :)

I never even paid attention to there being a red/orange tree right there. Now that you mention it, I look at it totally different. Figured someone would be able to explain it! thanks
