There must be some equation that Tim Cook ran to decide it was more cost-effective to move production back to the USA.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Something along the lines of "it costs 2x more to produce in the US, but we'll charge consumers 3x more!"

it's good PR.

Lenovo Lenovo announced last month that it was opening up a production line outside Greensboro, NC, and would begin turning out everything from tablets to engineering workstations next year. This created 115 new manufacturing jobs for North Carolina residents.

I'm guessing they're just going to be "assembling" the computers in the US? :D

Exactly my thought.
Although, to be fair, that's what Foxconn is anyway: an assembly site.

There's NO way they can "manufacture" the quantities required for iProducts in a very short time.
If anything, it will be an over-capacity type "manufacturing site".
The slaves of Foxconn will be taking care of the massive production needs.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

They are assembling some BTO's now already in the US. My i7 iMac was assembled (well, partially) in California. Even if they lose money on assembling in the US they are essentially just paying for PR.

Sounds like a little more: "We've been working on this for a long time, and we were getting closer to it," (Tim) Cook said of the production. "It will happen in 2013. We're really proud of it. We could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it's broader because we wanted to do something more substantial."

Just more wild speculation, but maybe they are going to launch there own full sized CPU and manufacture it in the US?

I don't think that's what the "moving manufacturing to the US is about", at least not yet.

There have been rumors over the past month that they might use their own processor in upcoming Mac products in the future. it's expected such a change would take a couple of years. Apple gets the A6 for about $18 each, the core I7 in the Macbook Pro has a price of $568 retail. Apple doesn't pay retail, but they could save money with this move. The A6 is reportedly produced in Texas by Samsung, but recent reports suggest they're looking for another source, which just a few days ago was reported it could be Intel. If Intel starts building ARM products for Apple it could happen in New Mexico, Oregon, Arizona, Israel, Ireland or China.

LOL -
After IBM sold PC's Laptops to Lenovo and shut down US manufacture sites and jobs ..
its back to the "return" of the Chinese Dragon.
Guess that means we succeed in promoting China to 1st Nation status and now they are going to export manufacturing to a country with 2nd Nation Status.

Wages in China are creeping upward, and for lower volume stuff (less desktop these days), it make business sense to be nimble to stop/modify/start the production flow. Hopefully, this will a new beginning.
