First and foremost, I feel like an idiot for falling for this. The first lens I sold through craigslist went without any problems. But a lens I purchased on Amazon, that turned out to be the wrong one did, instead of returning it I thought I'd sell it on craigslist. First text wanted to pay $100 less than what I did, so I said no. Next day I get a text from a number who wanted it but wanted to go through paypal (first mistake), I agreed and invoiced him, instead of paying my invoice he supposedly sends me an amount that was $100 more than what I asked for and wanted it shipped to a cousin in Nigeria. I couldn't see the money in my paypal, I got emails from paypal requesting that they need a tracking number before releasing the funds so I gave it to them (2nd mistake, and 2nd red flag), I started getting suspicious around this point but I kept thinking that I was going to end up making more than what I paid for (half of the extra $100 would have been for the shipping). Then this morning I get an email from paypal saying they couldn't release the funds because my account was not a business and the buyer needed to send me an extra $250 which then would open my account for the funds, then I would need to go to a Western Union Money Transfer and send the buyer $250.... That is where I dug my heels in the dirt and said no, I knew without a doubt that I had been scammed. That's when I researched the number that had been texting me and sure enough others had been scammed the same way. I feel like an idiot for not seeing all the red flags, I am going to post that same number on here for everyone else.

Sounds like he lost the lens since he provided a tracking number. I would contact shipper immediately and have it returned.

Well, only deal locally and face-to-face when selling in Craigslist.

Fuji XE-1, Zeiss ikon, Hasselblad; I love shooting film as a conceptual idea :)

Did I mention the money kept blocking my common sense?? My DH and I have a family business that sometimes ships overseas so it wasn't quite a red flag, except seeing that the money was not in my account.
I contacted USPS, and I cannot get it back because I would have to actually ask the buyer and being a scammer I know he will only laugh at me. The phone number is located in New York, but supposedly his cousin lives in Nigeria  I will repeat that I am an idiot. Now that I am above 30 posts on here, I can sell items on here, which was the issue except this lens was Nikon so it would not have mattered. I am going to learn from my stupidity and remember this crap.

Craigslist gets a bad rap for shenanigans like this, but it can be effective if you keep the transactions local and in cash only. I have bought and sold many things locally on Craigslist. Meet in a Starbucks or some such well-lit and busy place. Take someone else along if you are nervous and it should work out fine. Not to impugn the integrity of anyone here on POTN - I have purcahsed a lens and flash here and have been very happy with what I received, but I always prefer a face to face transaction with a stranger.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I believe that since you used the postal system it is mail fraud and is a federal crime. Obviously you're not going to bring anyone in Nigeria to justice but if there is an accomplice in the US using that NY phone number, you may get some justice. Probably not worth the time and effort but, maybe worth looking into.

Rules fpr selling on CL:

Do not accept PayPal for anything

Do not ship anything

Local sales only

Cash only

I see in your OP you already know where your mistakes were here so I won't rub them in.

I feel sorry for you OP.
But....I thought internet is so old already, any Nigerian scam is now just an old joke no one bothers to deal with anymore?

In contrast to this, I always go to allofcraigs dot come to search the whole CL and I have dealt with people from the other coast, pay them with Paypal and I always get my items. Of course, I usually talk to them over the phone, Google their names, exchange contact info before I do it. Is it risk-free? Or course not, but Nigerian buyer??
